Until the government started to meddle, the internet was a free land. Ideas were exchanged, files shared, jokes told, and technology innovated. The internet was a place for anyone to go to express themselves.
However, it is no longer like that. We are now at war. A war started by Hollywood, and now fought by the governments of the world. These groups want to censor our ideas, limit our speech, and hold back the future from us. The governments of the world, if they had the choice, would turn the internet into a minefield. A chaotic, inhospitable minefield, where anyone can take one wrong step and end up in jail.
The internet is not governed. The are no rules that specifically apply to the internet, and there is nobody authoritatively governing the internet. However, the internet is not anarchy. The internet is not tearing itself apart just for shits and giggles. The internet is collaborative. Everyone contributes to this magnificent, technological utopia in their own way. And it is a truly a utopia.
However, there are people who do not want this. There are people who want to grind the gears of the internet to a halt, and tear us back to the dark ages. These people want to stop the internet for, believe it or not, their own personal gain. Music producers are having their music listened to by millions and millions, yet want it to stop. Why? Because these people are getting the music for free. The internet is making their dreams of worldwide fame come true, and they react with hatred, and vicious threats.
It sickens me that the general public is living in fear. Fear of losing this precious gem of mankind to a selfish few, who are driven purely by their desire for money, and somehow are indifferent to the drastic, cataclysmic consequences of their actions. And what's worse: the internet superpowers are joining in. Vast corporations who live and breath (and even exist) within and because of the internet, are selling out their very habitat to the highest bidder.
Even as we speak, the vast network is being converted into a battlefield. Even as we speak, tanks are rolling out, and opening fire at our infrastructure. Already, thousands of bills have passed, allowing for our private, intimate secrets to be revealed to police. Bans have been put in place against the freedoms of speech and expression, and our right to access information.
Why? Why are we attacking our greatest accomplishment? What thoughts of morbidity and sadism run through the veins of those who seek to tear apart our network of power and knowledge?
